Understanding Intimacy Issues After Cancer

Cancer treatment—including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation—may affect your reproductive health or intimacy. These changes can impact both desire and function. You may also experience emotional or psychological effects, such as changes in body image, self-esteem, or closeness in your relationship. We are here to support you and, when appropriate, your spouse or loved one in addressing these concerns with sensitivity, compassion, and respect for the dignity of the human person.

Who Needs Intimacy Support?

Intimacy issues can affect all those who have had cancer, as well as their partners. Those who have gone through treatment for reproductive, genital, prostate, rectal, anal or breast cancer are particularly vulnerable to intimacy challenges.

Common Intimacy Challenges for Those with Cancer

The Intimacy Clinic can address a number of issues that those with cancer face, including:
  • Vaginal dryness, itching or burning
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Body image concerns after surgery or treatment

  • Erectile dysfunction

These challenges can take a toll on both the patient and their partner.
