Clinical Areas

The nurse internship program is available in a variety of settings, which offers interns an opportunity to work in an area that supports your goals.

Acute care

Acute care nursing focuses on providing hospital-based care for patients with serious, often time-sensitive medical conditions – like those needing immediate attention in emergency rooms, ICUs or trauma units. These nurses have specialized knowledge and skills to manage these situations and work on a variety of unit settings, from Med Surg, PACU, ED, OR, pre/post, cath lab, IR, GI lab, float pool (clinical resource team CRT/tele), neuro, cardiovascular, pediatrics and more.

Ambulatory care

Ambulatory care nursing focuses on providing health care services in a variety of OSF Medical Group outpatient offices, such as primary care, specialty care and urgent care. These nurses work with diverse patient populations to manage acute and chronic conditions, promote health and prevent disease. They have a high degree of autonomy and an important role in educating patients.

Home care

Home health nursing focuses on providing skilled nursing care to patients in their homes, often those who are homebound or need intermittent care to recover from illness or injury. Home health nurses may administer medications, assess patient conditions, manage chronic diseases, and provide education and support to patients and their families. They also work with other health care professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
